Lake Charles Memorial offers transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with the Edwards SAPIEN 3 valve. This procedure is approved for use in patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis when open heart surgery would be too high of a risk. Our multi-disciplinary heart team consisting of interventional cardiologist Christopher Thompson, MD take a rigorous approach to patient care through our Valve Clinic. With the innovative procedures we are utilizing in treating aortic valve disease, including balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV) and TAVR, patients can have an enriched and improved quality of life.

Lake Charles Memorial’s interventional coronary care program is ranked as the top program in the state and as one of the top 100 programs in the country. The analysis is conducted by CareChex®, which looks at patient safety, inpatient quality and measures of mortality, complications and readmission rates.

Memorial's Heart & Vascular program is the first in the nation to be recognized by the American College of Cardiology for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients receiving transcatheter aortic valve repair and replacement procedures. The award is based on evaluation of the staff’s ability to meet standards for multidisciplinary teams, formalized training, shared decision-making and registry performance.

The ACC’s Transcatheter Valve Certification is an external review and certification process that pairs with established national clinical databases to monitor patient safety and real-world outcomes related to transcatheter valve therapies. Participation in established national clinical databases such as the STS/ACC TVT Registry is required for hospitals interested in achieving Transcatheter Valve Certification.american college of cardiology certified badge

Dr. Thompson is one of the first interventional cardiologists in Lake Charles specializing in minimally invasive valve replacement called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) with the Edwards SAPIEN 3 valve. This procedure is approved for use in patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis.

Dr. Thompson is also certified to use the 360 Coronary Orbital Atherectomy System. The OAS is a device used for the treatment of a severely calcified narrowing of a coronary artery. The OAS is a system intended to facilitate stent delivery. The System is used in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who are acceptable candidates stenting due to severely calcified coronary artery lesions that have not been previously treated.
